With class society, the Hamburger Kunsthalle is dedicating a comprehensive exhibition to a chapter of one of the most multifaceted epochs in European art history - the art of the Dutch and Flemish 17th century - and its most renowned representatives. In this exhibition, the two contemporary artists Lars Eidinger (*1976) and Stefan Marx (*1979) reflect on the themes and motifs of the Old Masters with new works. The starting point for this large-scale show of around 200 works is the Hamburger Kunsthalle's top-class collection of genre paintings by Dutch and Flemish masters, which forms a focal point of the Kunsthalle's Old Masters collection. The paintings are complemented by drawings and prints from the Kunsthalle's Kupferstichkabinett (Museum of Prints and Drawings) as well as by around 80 important loans, including from the Metropolitan Museum New York and the Hermitage St. Petersburg as well as from major European museums such as the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza Madrid, the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, the Nationalmuseum Stockholm, the Kunstmuseum Basel and the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen Munich. Around another third of the works on display are by the artist Stefan Marx, who has realised typefaces especially for the exhibition, and by Lars Eidinger, from whom photographs and video works are presented.
