Description:
Anita Berber was THE dancer and actress of the golden 20s in Berlin.
A self-confident, emancipated femme fatale who was known for her erotic, artistic dances, scandals, but also as a style icon. She is said to have been the first woman to wear a dinner jacket, and anyone who thought anything of themselves went à la Berber.
For this picture she posed completely naked for Otto Dix for 3 days. Only 26 years old, she was addicted to alcohol and drugs as a result of her nightlife, and in the oil painting she appears to be dissipated and twisted.
As if he had foreseen her fate, for Anita Berber died only 3 years after the painting was completed.
And yet Berber radiates a peculiar power through the shades of red. The artist has captured this ambilvalence masterfully.
