EMIL NOLDE'S WAY OF PAINTING. ONE COLOR DEMANDS ANOTHER
16 Oct 2021 - 18 April 2022 | special exhibition | Research Compendium | German edition
The painting technique and artist materials of the well-known expressionist Emil Nolde (1867-1956) have been studied for the first time by an interdisciplinary team of conservators, art historians and natural scientists. The art-technological evaluation of Nolde's studio estate and his written sources were as much a part of the research as detailed microscopic, imaging and material-analytical examinations of his paintings. Known as a master of coloration, Nolde's choice of canvases and primers, paints, and diverse application techniques essentially determine the effect of his paintings. The impressive range of Nolde's working methods and his struggle to find artistic solutions are vividly explained in 44 works from all phases of his long career.First comprehensive and interdisciplinary study of the painting technique of the expressionist Emil Nolde.
Unprecedented art-technological evaluation of Nolde's archive and studio estate.
