Mourning

With war in Europe and the pandemic, mourning as a collective phenomenon has moved back into the centre of society. The groping exploration of an existential condition in images and texts.

Many of us are blind to the phenomena of loss and grief until we are confronted with them ourselves. Whether it is the parting from a loved one through separation or death, the loss of home and familiarity - we all have sorrowful experiences of irretrievability in our lives. And we all grieve differently.

This volume uses essays, contemporary artistic works from Seiichi Furuya to Maria Lassnig, literary texts and interviews to approach a disturbing condition that all too often takes us to the limits of communication. He uses worldwide examples to show that the enormously personal feeling of mourning also has an extraordinarily political dimension, whether in confrontations with the AIDS crisis or anti-racist protests that confront us with the question: For whom and how does our society mourn?
