A piece of Munch’s history
This cross-section of a branch, set in high-quality epoxy resin, comes from a pear tree with an extraordinary history. The tree was planted around 1800 in the courtyard of what is now the Edvard Munch House in Warnemünde and has been part of the history of this special place for more than two centuries.
Whilst Edvard Munch lived and worked in Warnemünde from 1907 to 1908, he immortalised the pear tree in his famous painting *Old Man in Warnemünde*. The painting depicts Munch’s landlord at the time, the pilot Carl Albert Nielsen, standing beside the tree, and is now housed in the Munch Museum in Oslo.
Following severe storm damage in 2019, the historic pear tree had to be felled in November 2024. Dendrochronological analyses confirmed its impressive age of around 224 years.
Each branch slice has been carefully handcrafted, set in epoxy resin and polished several times. As wood is a naturally grown material, no two slices are alike – each piece is unique. The embedded label indicates that this is a limited edition of no more than 200 pieces; the first slice bears the number 0/200 and is known as the ‘pilot’. Further pieces are produced exclusively on request.
