UNSTABLE MEDIA IN THE 21ST CENTURY explores some of the most radical voices in media art today through approximately 40 key works from the Centre Pompidou’s pioneering New Media collection.

Since the 1980s, the uncertain future of emerging technologies has challenged any stable conception of “new media” as an art form, as one technology replaces the next. Nevertheless, these technologies have become embedded in our sensory memory and form something that could be called our “subskin.” Through countless interfaces and lingering resonances, media culture is embodied and actualized daily as an interwoven substrate of human life, while simultaneously calling into question the possibility of a critical stance. The exhibition brings together a multitude of different art forms and situations and explores how artists have appropriated and reinvented the media over the past decades by both acknowledging and transforming them. The exhibition is divided into eight chapters and unfolds along a series of selected paths that open up new possible narratives and histories.

The Centre Pompidou is closed until 2030 due to extensive renovation work. This creates a unique opportunity to experience selected works as part of an exhibition co-organized by the Hamburger Kunsthalle and the Centre Pompidou.
